Lest We Forget

What is Remembrance Day?  Why do we celebrate and honor this day? Students brainstormed what they knew about this day and turns out we know a lot already!

We then started our inquiry by reading Feathers and Fools by Mem Fox a story of how misconceptions and assumptions can lead to significant and tragic consequences.  We then read the book Who Was Anne Frank? which the students were incredibly interested in and genuinely confused as to how such a horrific war could have happened.

Ability to retell a story is a skill that we are working hard on and we decided to retell Anne's story from her perspective.  Students were able to then have a peer edit their work and publish their work.

We concluded our week with some beautiful poppy art and lots of excellent discussion about why we do in fact use this flower as a symbol for Remembrance Day.
